Steelman Ironmaiden Festival of Multisport 2011Sunset Coast Multisport Club
The Sunset Coast Multisport Club was formed in 2005 to bring together a number of multisport enthusiasts within the Franklin District to train and socialize doing the things that they enjoyed. On 12th November 2006, with intrepid enthusiasm, the club set about establishing the inaugural Steelman Ironmaiden event. After only two months preparation time the event successfully attracted 150 competitors and with the valued support of many businesses and individuals in the Waiuku and wider Franklin District, the competitors enjoyed the 93 kilometer course of road, river, forest, beach and farmland.
WAIUKU NEW WORLD STEELMAN IRONMAIDEN
FESTIVAL OF MULTISPORT
The SunsetCoast
Multisport Club in conjunction with Waiuku New World are presenting the 6th Steelman Ironmaiden Festival of Multisport on Saturday 3rd December 2011 which will be based at the Waiuku Rugby Club. This exciting new concept brings
us the original Steelman Ironmaiden Multisport race plus exciting new events:
The separate events are:
- Waiuku New World Steelman Ironmaiden
- Global Hydraulics Duathlon (34km Mountain
Bike, 17km Run
- WBA Kids 2 Go Adventure Run (varying
distances for year 1 to year 8 school kids)
The Steelman Ironmaiden event is regarded as one of the must do events on New Zealand's Multisport circuit and is renowned for its toughness, yet offers the athletes a great awareness of the beauty that the local area has to show. The road cycle starts at the Waiuku and is soon into the uncompromising hills of Whiriwhiri before reaching the flats of Otaua/Aka Aka. Once reaching The Elbow, the kayakers paddle downstream on the WaikatoRiver passing through Deliverance Country before reaching Hoods Landing. Then a transition onto the mountain bike passing through the WaiukuForest and a few yee-ha downhill clay tracks before reaching the last transition amongst the hills of the West Coast. A tough run leg greets the athletes which will undoubtedly drain the last reserves of energy until they thankfully reach the finish line back at the Waiuku Rugby Club.
The Steelman Ironmaiden event also includes the Castaway's Corporate Teams category a must for team building within the workplace!
As an alternative, a Duathlon has been added as a new event which uses the last 2 legs of the Steelman Ironmaiden course. This will suit those athletes who do not possess the necessary kayaking skills. However, these 2 legs should not be taken lightly as they are the toughest of the legs on offer.
Another exciting new concept to the Festival of Multisport is the introduction of 2 different distance run/walk (mainly off road) events. These have been introduced so that the serious runners can be challenged but the community walkers get to see the best of views that Franklin has to offer. The longer distance (17km) will suit the runners and walkers who possess the required fitness to complete this distance and the shorter distance (8.5km) could be achieved by all others.
The most exciting development at the Festival of Multisport is the Kids 2 Go Adventure race which promises to attract a large field of kids who want to either win or just be involved in the fun. This event takes place at the Waiuku Rugby Club involving a run with a multitude of obstacles to be encountered. All the kids's entry fees are returned to them in the form of a BBQ, drink, gift pack and a large number of spot prizes. Their course passes through the finish area of the big boys events so the kids will be able to finish alongside some of New Zealand's best athletes.
All events take place on 3rd December 2011 and
for more information. Entry forms and Enter Online from 1st August 2011.
