Sunset Coast Multisport Club
The Sunset Coast Multisport Club was
formed in 2005 to bring together a number of multisport enthusiasts within the
Franklin District to train and socialize doing the things that they enjoyed.
On 12th November 2006, with intrepid
enthusiasm, the club set about establishing the inaugural Steelman Ironmaiden
event. After only two months preparation time the event successfully attracted
150 competitors and with the valued support of many businesses and individuals
in the Waiuku and wider Franklin District, the competitors enjoyed the 93
kilometer course of road, river, forest, beach and farmland.

Individual Categories
On Saturday, 8th
November the Sunset Coast Multisport Club (Waiuku) hosted the annual 2008
Waiuku New World Steelman Ironmaiden Multisport race in perfect weather
conditions.
This race has quickly gained reputation as one of the best Multisport races
on the circuit, with its mix of scenic and tough racing conditions
A top class field lined up which saw some great
individual battles amongst the leading elite men and womens divisions. The
event this year drew a good field with the overall numbers increasing by 56%
on 2007.
Mens Open Division
Neil Parkinson, Neil Gellatly, and Bart Muyle
showed true class in the open mens division with the lead changing several
times before eventual winner Neil Parkinson turned on the gas in the grueling
run leg to finish in a time of 4 hours 24, 7 minutes to claim the first prize
of $1,000 ahead of Neil Gellatly, with another 5 minutes back to Bart Muyle.

Womens Open Division
Two elite women had a close fought battle with
Louise Mark (below) again making the run leg count to claim the $1,000 first
prize when it mattered by finishing in a time of 4 hours 58 minutes. Katrine
Lawton finished second, only 5 minutes behind.
Teams Division
The spectators were shown some real speed work
in the relay teams category with Team "Broken Records" of Scott Kuegler -
PeakFuel cycle leg, Andrew Newick - ENZED kayak leg, Tim Wilding - Global
Hydraulics mountain bike leg and Nick Hirschfeld - 100% Gary Pyes setting a
new race record in a blistering time of 3 hours 57 minutes to claim the $1,000
first prize.
The course layout obviously suited these lads with 3 of the leg members
setting the fastest times on their respective disciplines. Fresh from their
"Motu" victory, they will be the team to beat in forthcoming races.
Veteran Teams
The mens veteran division was no different with
Wayne Hodgetts and Peter Sharlott neck and neck throughout the race until
Wayne Hodgetts legs held out better in the hot conditions to eventually win in
a time of 4 hours 36 minutes by 9 minutes over Peter Sharlott. Patrick Foley
finished in third place a further 4 minutes behind.
Local legend, Robyn McNaught showed true grit in
taking out the womens veteran section.
The Steelman Ironmaiden will no doubt be one of
the first ticks for all Multisporters when they are planning their future
racing calendars. 2008 saw many new multi-sporters entering a race for the
first time and their comments after were "positive"
This event gave what it promised!
2009 Steelman Ironmaiden will be on Saturday 14th November 2009 - The race
committee thank all the multisporters and support crews for making the 3rd
Steelman Ironmaiden a success - our objective is to build on its success and
to retain it's friendly atmosphere
